About this Race
The DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is a genuinely challenging course through the self-styled City of Bridges, crossing the rivers repeatedly and rolling over the hilly terrain that defines the western Pennsylvania city. The numerous bridge climbs and undulating neighborhoods make it far harder than a flat record course, demanding disciplined pacing throughout. Held in May, it draws big, famously raucous crowds that give it some of the loudest support in American running. The hills reward restraint and punish anyone who attacks early. It suits strong, hill-ready runners who want a tough, spirited race with thunderous crowd energy over a personal best.
Course Insight
Pittsburgh is a hilly May marathon defined by its rivers and bridges, with a notable climb in the middle miles and constant undulation that never lets you settle. Pace the ascents by effort and bank nothing on the descents you'll repay later. The bridge crossings are scenic but exposed. Spring warmth is an added variable. Run it as a strength effort and the hills stay an ally rather than an ambush.
Difficulty Breakdown
Mostly due to significant climbing (263m), tough late hills.

Race History
The Pittsburgh Marathon was first held in 1985 and, after a hiatus, was revived in 2009 to become one of the most challenging and well-supported city races in the United States. Its hilly course crossing the rivers of the City of Bridges, backed by famously raucous crowds, defined its character. From its revival it grew rapidly into a major spring marathon. Run each May, it now draws tens of thousands to its bridge-laden route.
